Sonic the Fighters
Sonic the Fighters, released outside Japan as Sonic Championship, is a 1996 fighting game developed by Sega AM2 and published by Sega for their Model 2 arcade system. The game pits players in one-on-one battles with a roster of characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Sonic the Fighters was made using the fighting engine for Fighting Vipers (1995), and was the first 3D game in the Sonic series. The idea for a Sonic fighting game was conceived when a Sega AM2 programmer experimented with a 3D Sonic the Hedgehog model in Fighting Vipers, its animation impressing and convincing the Sonic Team to approve the project.

Where Sonic the Fighters sits on the grid
The grid places every game in the catalogue on measured axes rather than on an opinion. This is where Sonic the Fighters lands on each map it has the data for, with the share of the catalogue it beats on each axis.
- Year
- 53ahead of 9% of the catalogue
- Reach
- 32ahead of 74% of the catalogue
Percentiles are against the games that carry a reading on that axis, not the whole catalogue: counting a game with no figure as a zero would flatter everything that has one. How the grid works.
What readers say about Sonic the Fighters
Reviews written by people who have played it. These are separate from the GamingPickz Score and are never averaged into it: that score comes from thousands of Steam reviews with a sample-size correction, and a handful of unverified ratings would distort it rather than improve it.
