Genre answers how a game plays. Theme answers what it is about, and that is usually the thing people are actually looking for. Someone after a zombie game does not much care whether it is a shooter or a survival sim.

Where themes come from. Steam user tags first, because they are applied by players and describe how a game feels rather than how it is formally classified. Western, Crime, Zombies and Atmospheric exist as tags and as no formal classification anywhere. Where a game has no Steam listing, which is normal for console and retro releases, we fall back to Wikidata genre labels. Themes below 6 games are dimmed and not indexed.
