The best Halo gunplay since Halo 3, attached to a campaign structure and a live-service model that both took a long time to find their footing.

What is Halo Infinite?

Halo Infinite got the hardest part right immediately. The weapons feel correct, the sandbox interactions between grenades, melee and vehicles are back to the series' best, and the grappleshot is the most significant addition to Master Chief's kit in twenty years.

Everything around that took considerably longer. The campaign shipped without co-op, the multiplayer shipped without core playlists, and the progression system was widely criticised at launch. Most of this has since been addressed, which makes the game a very different proposition now than it was in 2021.

What is Halo Infinite about?

The campaign moves to a semi-open Zeta Halo, structured around outposts, towers and a set of side objectives. It is not a large open world by modern standards, and that restraint mostly works in its favour.

The narrative is deliberately opaque about what happened between Halo 5 and this game, which will frustrate anyone invested in the previous entry. The Weapon, a new AI companion, is the strongest character work the series has done in some time.

How Halo Infinite plays

The grappleshot changes how you approach every encounter. It pulls you to cover, yanks weapons out of the air, stuns Brutes and turns vehicle hijacking into a fluid move rather than a scripted one.

The open structure means encounters repeat. Clearing outposts is enjoyable the first several times and clearly padding by the twentieth.

Multiplayer is free-to-play and separate from the campaign purchase. Arena modes are excellent, Big Team Battle is inconsistent, and Forge, added in late 2022, is one of the most capable creation tools in any shooter.

What works

  • The strongest Halo sandbox in over a decade
  • The grappleshot is a genuinely transformative addition
  • Free-to-play multiplayer with non-expiring battle passes
  • Forge is exceptionally powerful

What does not

  • Repetitive open-world outpost objectives
  • Story skips over the events of Halo 5 without explanation
  • A very rough first year of live-service support
  • Split-screen campaign co-op was cancelled

What the review sites say

Read directly from each source rather than aggregated from a third party, for the Xbox Series X version. Sample sizes differ by orders of magnitude between critics and players, which matters more than the gap in the scores.

Individual publications, each scoring one platform on a review build at launch. A single outlet's score tells you what one reviewer thought, which is often more useful than an average.

User scores accumulate over years and absorb every patch, price change and outage. They are noisier than critic scores and they are also the only signal that reflects the game as it exists now.

Aggregators, individual outlets and players are answering different questions. Critics score a game at launch on a review build. Player scores accumulate for years and absorb every patch, price change and server outage, which is why the two diverge most on live-service releases. Read every number next to its sample size.

Method. Scores are read from each source page by a named editor, on a stated date, for the platform named above. They are not pulled from an API and not aggregated from another site. Third-party review platforms block automated collection, so each figure is re-checked by hand before publication rather than trusted from an old file. Last read by Automated fetch from first-party APIs on 2026-08-30.

What players actually argue about

Community sentiment separates cleanly into how the game feels, which is admired, and how it was run, which is not. Threads about the former are positive and threads about the latter are not.

Recurring praise

  • The gunplay and sandbox feel are treated as settled: this is the best Halo has played in over a decade
  • The grappleshot is near-universally liked, including by players critical of everything else
  • Forge is regarded as one of the most capable creation tools in any shooter
  • Non-expiring battle passes are repeatedly held up as the model other live-service games should copy

Recurring complaints

  • The content drought through the first year is the defining complaint and still colours discussion
  • Desync and shot registration issues generated sustained frustration in competitive play
  • Cosmetic store pricing was an early flashpoint and remains a sore point
  • The cancellation of split-screen campaign co-op is still raised as a broken promise

69% of 181,112 Steam reviewers recommend it. Mixed, 125,523 positive of 181,112. That is a far larger sample than any critic aggregate, and it reflects the game as it is now rather than as it launched. Read them on Steam.

Citations pending. The two lists above are our editor's summary of themes that recur across community discussion. They are characterisations, not quotes, and nothing here is attributed to any individual. Before publishing, add the specific threads you read to community.threads with their URL, score and the date you read them, so a reader can check the summary against the source.

Method. We read the largest discussion threads on the game's main subreddit and note themes that appear repeatedly across independent threads, not single strong opinions. Upvotes measure agreement among people who are already engaged enough to post, which is not the same as agreement among everyone who played. We never quote an individual without linking the thread.

How long is Halo Infinite?

The campaign runs around eleven hours, or roughly thirty for full completion of side content and collectibles. Network co-op was added in a 2022 update, and split-screen campaign co-op was cancelled.

Multiplayer is a separate free download and does not require owning the campaign. It is supported by seasonal battle passes, and unusually, purchased passes do not expire.

Where to buy and what it costs

Lowest list price$59.99across 7 stores, US MSRP

Halo Infinite lists at $59.99 at its cheapest official platform. Street prices fall well below list within a year of release, so the current column is the one that matters once a live check has run.

Included with a subscription. Halo Infinite is part of Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass. If you already subscribe, that is the cheapest way to play it and you should not buy it separately.

MSRP is the publisher list price in the United States and does not change. The current column is filled from a live price check and is empty until one has run.

Stores marked as key resellers sell activation keys rather than the game itself. Prices are usually lower. Regional key restrictions, no publisher support, and limited recourse if a key fails are the trade-off, so weigh the saving against that.

No live prices yet. MSRP above is the publisher list price and is accurate, but almost nobody pays list after launch year. Run npm run prices with an IsThereAnyDeal API key to fill the current column, or set pricing.offers[].price and pricing.checkedOn by hand. We leave it blank rather than show a stale number as if it were current.

Method. MSRP is the publisher list price in the United States, excluding tax, and does not change. The current column is a live price read from each store and is only shown with a check date attached. Regional pricing differs substantially. We list official first-party stores whether or not they pay us, and we mark every affiliate link and every key reseller. No live price check has run for this entry. Full pricing methodology.

Where it sits on the grid

QuadrantSituational6 of 6 on value

On The GamingPickz Grid, Halo Infinite scores 7 for value and 80 for quality, which places it in Situational. At the price we last observed, that works out to about $5.45 per hour of main story.

Value is recomputed whenever a tracked price changes, so this position is not fixed. How the axes work.

Price history

No history yet. This chart fills itself once the hourly price check has been running. Each run appends one point, so the graph becomes useful after a few days and genuinely informative after a sale cycle. Run npm run prices with an IsThereAnyDeal key, or npm run prices -- --demo to preview the chart with clearly-labelled synthetic data.

Who made Halo Infinite

343 Industries

Developer · Founded 2007 · Redmond, Washington · Roughly 600 staff and contractors

343 Industries was created by Microsoft in 2007 specifically to take Halo forward after Bungie left. It is named after 343 Guilty Spark, a character in the original games.

The studio has carried the series through Halo 4, 5 and Infinite, alongside the Master Chief Collection. Its tenure has been marked by strong moment-to-moment combat and repeated difficulties with launch content and long-term support.

Announced at E3 2018 as a Slipspace Engine tech demo. The engine was built specifically for this game, and the length of that engine work is widely cited as a cause of the schedule problems.

The July 2020 gameplay reveal was received badly enough that Microsoft delayed the game by a year rather than ship it alongside the Xbox Series X launch. It eventually shipped in December 2021, with multiplayer arriving three weeks early as a surprise beta.

On budgets. We list a budget only when a primary source stated one: a regulatory filing, a court document, an executive on the record, or a published post-mortem. Most figures circulating for big-budget games are estimates repeated until they read as fact. Where nobody credible has said a number, this field stays undisclosed rather than carrying a guess.

How many people bought it

No sales figures recorded. Publishers announce these irregularly, in press releases, quarterly filings and milestone posts, and the wording differs every time. Add each announcement to sales.milestones with its date, who said it and a source URL, and this section renders a chart of the run-up. We do not estimate sales, and we do not repeat a figure we cannot link.

Method. Sales figures come from publisher announcements, quarterly filings or platform milestone posts. They are claims by an interested party, not audited numbers, and the wording matters: "sold" can mean units shipped to retail rather than units bought by players, and "players" counts anyone who launched the game including on a subscription.

Recent news

No news items yet. Add dated entries to news[] with a source and URL. Keep each one to a couple of sentences in your own words with a link out. Republishing another outlet's article in full is both a copyright problem and a scraped-content problem under AdSense, and a link plus your own summary is worth more to a reader anyway.

Our verdict on Halo Infinite

Judged on how it plays, Halo Infinite is excellent. Judged on how it launched, it was a mess. Several years of updates have narrowed that gap considerably.

For a Game Pass subscriber this is an easy recommendation. As a full price campaign purchase in isolation, it is a harder sell than the multiplayer, which costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Halo Infinite free?

The multiplayer is free-to-play on Xbox and PC. The single-player campaign is a paid purchase, and it is also included with Game Pass.

Is Halo Infinite on PlayStation?

No. Halo is published by Xbox Game Studios and has never released on PlayStation hardware.

Does Halo Infinite have campaign co-op?

Yes, online co-op for up to two players was added in a 2022 update. Split-screen campaign co-op was announced and later cancelled.

Do Halo Infinite battle passes expire?

No. Once purchased, a battle pass remains available and you can complete it at any time. This is unusual among live-service shooters.
