It is a time of war. Galbadia, a Global Superpower, has declared war on Dollet, a country whose training academy is home to two personalities: the hot-headed Seifer and the 'lone wolf', Squall Leonhart. Both are equally at conflict with each other as their country is with Galbadia; to others, Squall appears lacking in team spirit, while...

Problems players report

We read the 300 most recent negative Steam reviews of Final Fantasy VIII on 30 August 2026 and counted what they mention. These are complaints, not confirmed defects: we have not reproduced any of them, and a review describes one person's machine. What the counts tell you is which problems more than one person ran into.

  1. Crashes and freezes18 of 300 (6%)

Too bad it only works outside of battles and if you forget to deactivate it during a FMV, the game crashes.

Steam review, 16 March 2026 · 4 hours played · 22 readers marked it helpful

i searched everywhere for solutions but literally none of them fixed the random crashing on loading screens.

Steam review, 14 March 2023 · 14 hours played · 16 readers marked it helpful
  2. Performance and stutter9 of 300 (3%)

FFVII has a whole plethora of mods to choose from to make things palatable to a spoiled modern gamer; frame rate boosts, graphical overhauls, different character models, the whole shebang.

Steam review, 20 June 2025 · 74 hours played · 6 readers marked it helpful

FPS is way too fast (and I've tried toggling off the speed boost option to no avail), game crashes every time you enter the overworld randomly, sometimes this game is unplayable.

Steam review, 23 November 2025 · 53 hours played · 5 readers marked it helpful
  3. Controller and input9 of 300 (3%)

Playstation 4 controller is not working, no matter what you do.

Steam review, 30 April 2023 · 4 hours played · 4 readers marked it helpful

now my controller doesnt work suddenly.

Steam review, 20 March 2022 · 89 hours played · 2 readers marked it helpful

A further 17 reviews call the game buggy or broken without saying how, which is why they are counted separately rather than assigned to a theme. Counted by keyword across review text, so a review discussing two problems is counted under both. Read the reviews yourself.
